June is Pride Month! A time dedicated to celebrating 2SLGBTQAI+ communities, and commemorating their contributions. It's also a time of focusing on advocating for equal rights and fostering a world where everyone can embrace their true selves without fear, violence or discrimination. Pride month has extended into Pride Season with a variety of events over the June - September period.
Why is Pride Month Celebrated in June?
June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall uprising (also known as the Stonewall riots) which took place in New York and started on June 28, 1969. The uprising lasted several days and is credited as the spark that lead to the decriminalizing of same-sex sexual acts.
Evolution of the Pride Flag
The Pride flag has undergone an evolution of design and meaning, culminating in the most current Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. It's a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact the evolving Canada. The House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month in 2009. The name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017. Each week of June is dedicated to a different theme highlighting specific aspects of Indigenous history and perspectives. To launch National Indigenous History Month, we invite you to discover the archives we preciously preserve in our collections, along with resources and projects that celebrate the diversity
and richness of Indigenous cultures and languages.
We are happy to share with Sault College students a wealth of diverse resources, further enriching their understanding of Indigenous history and culture.
Embark on a colorful and imaginative animated web series that follows the spiritual journey of a young boy through an Indigenous rite of passage: a vision quest. Along his path, he encounters seven sacred animals, each imparting wisdom on how humanity should coexist with Mother Earth.
In collaboration with The Turtle Lodge International Centre for Indigenous Education and Wellness in Sagkeeng First Nation and IG Wealth Management, we proudly present a series of short animated films on The Seven Sacred Laws. Written by Anishinaabe Elder, Dr. David Courchene, directed by Indigenous filmmaker, Erica Daniels of Peguis First Nation, and brought to life by Manitoba’s Peg City Pictures Inc., these vignettes share the narratives of Indigenous Peoples in their authentic voices. This format ensures accessibility not only for Indigenous communities but for all Manitobans seeking cultural enrichment and understanding.
